What is Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens which impedes the passage of light, causing a decrease in the vision. It is the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40, and is the prinicipal cause of blindness in the world.

The lens is made of mostly water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, allowing light to pass through it to focus a clear image. As we age, this protein begins to break down and clump together, and start to cloud a small area of the lens which forms cataract. Over time, the cataract may become denser, making it more difficult to see.

Most cataracts are related to ageing, other causes of cataract may include injury, inflammation, disease. Occasionally children may be born with the condition too.
