Glaucoma Surgery Aftercare

Thorough postoperative care treatment and follow-up are mandatory to a successful outcome in surgeries. At Steve Seah Eye Centre, we have a team of dedicated and well trained staffs to provide excellent post-operative care for the patients.

Glaucoma Post Surgery Care
Emergencies

Do not hesitate to contact us should you experience:

  • Pain not relieved by medication.
  • Excessive discharge from the operated eye.
  • Deterioration of vision.
  • Sudden onset of flashes or floaters.
Care for Your Eye
  • Keep your eye padded till the next day unless otherwise told. You may remove when applying eye drops.
  • Apply eye drops / ointments as instructed and bring them for the following day’s appointment.
  • On post-operation review, our nurse will clean the operated eye for you. Instructions will be given on how to instill the medication and maintain eye hygiene.
  • Avoid rubbing or applying pressure on the eye for 4-6 weeks.
  • Mild pain may be relieved by prescribed painkillers.
  • You may wash your hair by tilting your head backwards slightly.
  • You should wear your sunglasses / protective eye shield to protect against injury to the eye.
  • The transparent eye shield should be worn while sleeping, for 2 weeks.
  • You can sleep in any comfortable position. However, avoid pressure on the operated eye.
Medication
  • Use your medication as prescribed.
  • Always wash your hands before applying any medication.
  • You should clean the operated eye gently with sterile saline wash and sterile cotton balls.
  • When applying eye drop, shake the eye drop bottle before use. Tilt your head back, look up and gently pull the lower eyelid down. Instill one drop onto the eye, avoiding contact with the eyelashes.
  • Store the eye drops / ointment as instructed and discard them after 1 month.
  • If more than one eye drops is ordered, wait 5 minutes before instilling the next eye drop.
  • Eye drops should be instilled before applying the ointment.
Activity
  • Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 2 weeks so as not to injure the eye / wound.
  • Avoid carrying children who may accidentally poke your eyes.
  • Bending down, stooping, weight training or the lifting of heavy loads should be avoided for 1 month.
  • You may watch television programs and continue with reading.
  • Avoid crowded or dusty places.
