Care for Your Eye
  • Keep your eye padded till the next day unless otherwise told. You may remove when applying eye drops.
  • Apply eye drops / ointments as instructed and bring them for the following day’s appointment.
  • Our nurse will clean the operated eye for you. Instructions will be given on how to instill the medications and maintain eye hygiene.
  • Avoid rubbing or applying pressure on the eye for 4-6 weeks.
  • Mild pain may be relieved by prescribed painkillers.
  • You may wash your hair by tilting your head backwards slightly.
  • You may wear your glasses / sunglasses to protect against injury to the eye.
  • The eye shield should be worn while sleeping for 2 weeks.
  • You can sleep in any comfortable position. However, avoid pressure on the operated eye.
  • Use your medication as prescribed.
  • Always wash your hands before applying any medication.
  • You should clean the operated eye gently with sterile saline wash and cotton balls.
  • Shake the eye drop bottle before use. Tilt your head back, look up and pull the lower eyelid down. Instill one drop onto the eye, avoiding contact with the eyelashes.
  • Store the eye drops / ointment as instructed and discard them after 1 month.
  • If more than one eye drop is ordered, wait 5 minutes before instilling the next eye drop.
  • Eye drops should be instilled before applying the ointment.

Glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed when the eye has fully recovered from surgery. This is usually done 4 – 8 weeks after surgery.

  • Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 2 weeks so as not to injure the eye / wound.
  • Avoid carrying children who may accidentally poke your eyes.
  • You may watch television programs and continue with reading.
  • Avoid crowded or dusty places.

As these are general guidelines, please approach our staff should you have any further queries.
